English II-Short Story Quote (11/28/12)

Read the following quote and comment on its meaning in a 5+ sentence post. Makes sense of your thinking through writing.

"Th short story, compared with the novel, is a lonely, personal art; the lyric cry in face of human destiny, it does not deal as the novel does with types or with problems of moment, but with what Synge calls 'the profound and common interests of life'." -- Frank O'Connor

  1. Short stories are a lot shorter and take much less time to read. They are lonely, because people are done with them right away. There is as much time for conflicts in the story to be resolved. Due too the lack of space, there is more left out and less explanation. Even though they are short they get the point across, and usually have a good meaning.

  2. i think the meaning is its not a story for everyone. a short story is more personal for individuales. where novels are longer and appel to a wide audience short storys tend to be more for individuals as they often talk about personal events. they appeal more to people who can relate more then people who cant relate.
