BIG IDEA: What are the factors (forces) that determine (shape) identity?

Following readings, films, and presentations, it's good practice to PONDER and to APPLY. One way to do this is by REFLECTING through WRITING. In this way, we ACTIVELY CONSTRUCT meaning as we come to UNDERSTAND our own thoughts and ideas.

Explore your understanding of the BIG IDEA. Use examples from the movie -- and even from your own experience -- to support and explore your thinking. Write in complete sentences, paying attention to word choice, grammar, and spelling as you compose.

  1. I believe the things that shape people are the people they are around the most. I believe this because we pick up new things, and do things we like that other people do. We do the things that people we admire do also. We act most like the people who raised us because we lived with them for 18 years or longer, can you imagine the impact that has your personality and the way you are. Siblings, and friends play a big role in shaping a persons personality

  2. Their lives that go around them and their hobbies sometimes shape their identity because thats the things they do to entertain themselves. Childhood and friends are a factor because they share secrets and ask them questions, so they rely on them. Parents divorcing or getting married can make a character act happy or sad.

  3. I think that the main factor that shapes identity is love. You need to have love and attention towards you to feel like you belong somewhere. You need to have friends and family by your side at all times for someone to support you. People need to belong somewhere, or they will become outcast in their community. No one likes being alone 24/7. You need to know where you belong so you can be yourself around others.

  4. I think the big idea was using your imagination, and learning to move on with life. When Monty moved to town Finn was interested in the fact that he was a writer. She wanted to learn from him, so she paid him. She matured over the time she spent with him, and they grew a close bond. Monty was a drunk when he met Finn, but she made him a better person, and he learned to move on. Willow was trying to wrap her head around the fact that her father wasn't going to visit her after the divorce. She took it really hard, but after she read her mom's diary, about when her parents got a divorce, she knows that it was equally as hard for her. Miss O'Neil has a huge factor on making people better, because she is so positive and optimistic. They all help shape each other into better understanding people.

  5. It is very hard to talk about identity, mainly when we are talking about ourselves. In my opinion, we are shaped since we born. Our family and friends are the most important thing in this aspect, they live with us every day and somehow we often acquired the characteristics of them.
People who are not understood by others normally have difficulty to find their own in the world. They don't fill accepted by others, because they are not even understood by those who live with them. While people who are accepted by de society lives better and has an own personality.
The experiences that we have during our lives are really important to define who we are and who we will become. Who lives different and hard experiences will probably be stronger than others.
This is the way that I see the Big Idea.

  6. Conflict is the big idea when forming a character. When Monty started drinking and stopped writing, he seemed to be in trouble and struggled in life. It started making him a grouch and probably depressed. His life got turned around when Finnegan came and helped him write again. It changed him definitely. You could tell because he enjoyed writing for Flora, and it made him fall in love with Mrs. O'Neil. Falling in love with Mrs. O'Neil made him probably forget about his own problems. It probably made him forget about his wife who supposedly "Left him". But in the end it all worked out. He probably still would be a grouch sometime, but the conflict changed and shaped him to turn him into someone he used to be.

  7. There are many factors that shape identity. One factor is some events that have happened in their life. For example, when Monty's wife died, his life turned to drinking and not writing anymore. When Mrs. O'neal got divorced, that shaped her identity along with the 3 girls. Another factor is the outlook on life. It might be because of events that happened in the past. Like with Monty, he just kind of looked at life dully until the O'neals came along.

  8. I think the only things that effect us as people are the things that happen to us or the people we meet. Whether the event be good or bad, it can force us to re-evaluate things. They can force us to take responsibility or take action. I think the people we meet effect us the most, though. People can say things to us or do things that make us want to change, for good or for bad, depending on what they did/said. We are always trying to impress one another, and that sometimes causes us to change. Sometimes that's a good thing, and sometimes it isn't. In the movie, Monte stopped drinking and started writing again after meeting the O'Neil's, and that was obviously a good thing. But sometimes people try to change for reasons they shouldn't.

  9. Who you are is shaped by your environment. Your culture, family, friends, and experiences. In Monty's case, he was happy when he played baseball; he stayed as happy as he could be while he was disabled, and became bitter when he lost his wife. As for me, I'm influenced greatly by people I know and places I live. When I was little and lived in Waukee, I was different than I am now. Had I stayed there, I'd probably be the same as I am today. Moving to Earlham and meeting my best friend shaped who I am. If I'd grown up elsewhere, I wouldn't be me; I'm just thankful for my friends, for making me who I am.

  10. Monty's identity was shaped by when his wife died and then he was always drinking and didn't want to write any more then finnegon came along and changed Monty and made him more open and he started typing from imagination not from his mind. But he also changed because he started out not liking the island thens started to meet the people then he start liking the island more and more then he finally did want to leave and he bought the house so he could live there for the rest of his life.

  11. Repeatedly in classes we are asked to get the “Big Idea,” or the
“Big Picture.” So what really is the Big Idea? You could say that it’s what the story is about, or what happened, or even just what the author wants to get across to readers. But it’s so much more. When authors write, they have a purpose. When someone constructs a script for a movie, they have something that they want the viewers to leave with. The lessons we learn from what we take away, are supposed to have an impact on our lives, right?
The Magic of Belle Isle taught many, many lessons, as do many inspirational movies. What we take away from it, is what we choose. That’s kind of the thing about writing the script, or writing a story, it’s a total shot in the dark. You can jam pack as many lessons and morals into it as possible, but not one person is going to get everything out of it that you wanted to get across. It’s kind of a beautiful thing when you think about it, that no person understands it the same way. Whether the viewer or reader takes anything away at all, is up to them. The author is totally out of control of what happens after it reaches the stores, or the big screen.
So when we watched The Magic of Belle Isle, I’m sure it was different for everyone. Some people probably saw no purpose in the movie, and some people probably loved it. So bringing us back to the Big Idea, what did you see? I saw an old worn out grouch, who was given another chance at his perspective of life. I saw a little girl whose life was changed forever. I saw a single mother of three girls giving her life to her daughters devotedly. Seeing a pattern there? Yes, life! Life, a long, tiring process of becoming the person you’re meant to be. I think people reach that point in their life at different times. We saw several people in this movie being changed as individuals.
Mr. Wildhorn learned to love. Finn learned that life is what you make of it, that you’re the author of your own life. Mrs. O’Neil learned that family is the most important thing you can have. Willow learned that there are two sides to every story, and more people are hurting than you may know. And Carl, the fun-loving child at heart, taught us many lessons. Carl taught us that even though things may get rough, there’s always that inner childhood innocence that we can crawl back to . While maybe not everyone changed, they didn’t need to. Some characters are simply there to remind us about the little things in life. I believe authors use characters to get across how they’re feeling or what they want the world to know. So while one person may understand a lesson given in a story or movie, another person may interpret it completely different. So the Big Idea of Belle Isle and all it’s friends? Life may pass us by, if we aren’t ready to live in every moment.

  12. Several factors go into shaping your identity. One is the people around you. "You are the average of the five people closest to you," somebody once said. I agree with that. Related to that is the environment in which you live. It is sorta like a more concrete and broad way to see the first thing. Every person around you changes you just a little bit, and then those halfhearted decisions may become habits, which tell others who we are. So, the general environment and what happens around you shapes you identity a lot also. Events will change your personality too, good or bad. If something good happens while you are doing something, you may continue doing whatever led you there more. If it's bad, we will avoid the certain action again. Those become habits also, and in turn they make you. Simply, every event and feeling in life changes you just the littlest bit, identity won't be the same even second to second.

  13. Have you ever wondered what the factors that determine how identities shaped? While I am going to tell you how identities shaped, by using examples from: The movie The Belle Isle and stuff from my own experience.

Well since we all watched the movie we saw how identity was shaped between Monte. I remember Monte when he first showed up he was grumpy. I think thats because he was lonely and his wife died. Well as the story went on he became happier because he was surrounded by wonderful people. That shows who you're around can shape your identity.

Identity can be shaped by how you're raised. If you have a really strict mom then you're most likely going to be better. If you don't have a well anchored family then you're going to be different. So how you're raised is going to shape your identity. Another thing that's going to shape our identity is are character. How we act is going to form us.
As you can see theres many things that shape identity.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Factors that identify is probably how the person really is like depending on how they were raised. Everyone around you are different. No one is the same. Identity is also shaped on how you act and how you treat other people. For example monty's identity was shaped with how he was in a wheel chair and how he opened up to finn. Finn for an example her identity was shaped on how she was sad about her dad leaving but still was happy where she was. Peoples identity is shaped on how they're emotions are and how they are treat other people.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Identity. We all have one. It's what defines who we are and what we act like in certain situations. But what shapes our identities? One factor that may help form this identity are past events. If something in the past happened that really affected your feelings to an extreme extent, it may put in place a permanent mood or disposition. If something ridiculously unlucky and emotionally scarring happened to you in the past, maybe now you're bitter and rude all the time. This doesn't have to happen. Things happen in life, but you can choose how they affect you, no matter how large or scarce the cost. I know that one event that shaped my identity was finding out that Michael was going to be a marine. I doesn't seem like it'd be very affecting, but it allows me to carry myself a little higher. I;m proud of the decision he's made.
Another thing that could shape identities are other people. Say someone near has a certain attitude that makes you mad. More times than not, something this petty is usually avoidable, but if not, it can really affect you. Think of it this way... Their bad attitude is a poison. If a snake bites you, what does the venom do? It spreads. In the same way, someone around you could spread their disposition like a virus, permanently affecting your identity.
An example from the movie about this would be Finn and Monte. Monte's constant rudeness at first corrupted Finn in a way. Maybe it wasn't corruption, but she was more upset the normal.
One more way that identities can be shaped are thoughts. When we have nothing to do, or are trying to sleep at night, our thoughts are free to do whatever they want. You might be in control of them, daydreaming of what future events may hold. Maybe you're reliving a past memory that truly delighted you, but, thoughts can sometimes be evil and corrupted. They can scar you, just by thinking about it. They could be anything. Thus the saying comes in, "An idle mind is the devil's playground." When Monte even thinks about his wife's death, it hurts him inside. He hates it. But, his thoughts also frequently visit the other extreme. They can drift into the mind and life of Jubal McClaws. Here he flourishes, here he is set free and can walk again.
People's identities can be complex, but some simple. Getting to know someone isn't hard. Think about your identity, although it may be difficult to change, it's possible. Be someone who other people look up to, have that light about you that draws people out of the dark. But, most of all, just be you.

  16. Identity can be shaped depending on the things you are exposed to everyday. For instance the way your parents raise you and the way they act. It can also be the way your friends say or act, but can you control the way your identity is shaped. In my opinion you can in the Magic of Belle Isle monty ould control being a drunk it was his own choice no one else's. Think about how your identity is shaped.

  17. The way a character acts, or some of his traits. In some cases it will change and become very different.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Identity plays a major role in our everyday lives. It shows us the way we want to live our lives. It shows us who we are going to hang out with and who we aren't going to be able to stand. Identity is shaped by how you react to different problems. For example, a coach or a teacher is going to push you to work hard and get better. If you have the attitude, or identity, that you don't want to, that this is stupid, that this won't help you get better at anything, then you when get better. For me, the person who's identity was shaped the most was Willow O'Neal's identity. She started out hating everyone and everything. Later, when she found and read her Mom's diary, she changed her ways and she started to understand that her Mom was trying to help her the whole time. How will your identity be shaped?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Identity is what makes you, you. It can be shaped by the choices you make, or how you view the world. In the movie, Finn's identity was shaped by her life style. Her parents were divorced, and they were living in Belle Isle at their summer home. This was also how Willows identity was shaped, except negatively. Willow didn't want to live in Belle Isle. She wanted to live in the city with her friends, where she could also see her dad. Identity, obviously, identifies who you are as a person. The movie producers did a great job establishing the identities of most of the characters.

  20. Identity can be shaped in many different ways. You ca change your identity by yourself. There are also people ha will change you identity by simple just meeting the person. The more you get to know that person the more of an effect they can have on you. Actions can also change the way that you are. A serious injury could change you. A place that you see on a vacation or something could also change your thought process in life. Anything in this world can shape your identity. It just depends on how you look at it.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Identity can be shaped my a lot of different things. Thoughts can shape identity. If you are bored and have nothing to do you can think about anything you want to really. Past memories can be an influence to how your identity is shaped. You may have had something bad happen to you and you relive that. It scarred you, and that can change how you are. When Monte lost his wife that shaped him and that was a memory that scarred him.
It could be how your parents raised you. People all grow up in different ways. If you have a tough life when you are younger that is going to shape you identity. If you had a really easy time then that will shape your identity in a whole different way. Willow, FInn, and Flora all had a easy life when they were younger, but they did lose their dad to a divorce which made it tougher, and that shaped their identity.
It could be the people that you hang out with they could help shape you identity. If you hang out with people that aren't very nice that is going to change who you are. If you have friends that are understanding and care for you that will help you shape your identity. That is kind of what happened to Monte and Finn.

  22. Idenity is shaped by what you enjoy doing and who you generally hang out with. Normally you and your friends have similar indenities. You enjoy the same activities, music genres, and the same clothing styles. Your identity can also be shaped by your family and your home life. Your parents can influence some of the things that you enjoy doing. Finn's identity was different kind ouf outgoing and adventrous, she was much different than her sisters. Idendidties are all different, they could be similar, but everyone is different. What you chose to do creates your idenity.

    ReplyDelete
  23. There are many things that shape identity and determine it. for one the way you live, the way you behave at home and then maybe change when you are away. you might feel more free, you have the ability to do more without your parents there. Then it's the question what will you do with that freedom? will you be appropriate or will you do things that you are to young to do? for instance drugs. What you do when you aren't around parents really shapes your identity, and who you are. Also the things you say how you speak to one another also says who you are. If you are mean of if you are nice. All these examples apply to the movie Monty with his drinking, and WIllow with her attitude towards thing in the beginning of the movie. How have you shaped your identity? Or how will you shape your identity? How will people be able to determine who you are?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Your identity shapes who you are as a person. Every one you come in contact with could have an impact on you identity or personality. You are probably a lot like your parents because you pick up on what is right and what is wrong when you are really little. Then you start making friends and deciding the choices you make. The decisions that you make now is really big on who you will be later on in life. Monte had a tragedy happen and he had no one to talk about it to so he turned to drinking. It was ruining his life. When he found Finn, he had someone to talk to about everything that had happened. Then he stopped drinking. He discovered a new friend and talked about all of his problems and now he is happier and sober.
You can shape and change your own identity. You need to choose the right road to go down in life so you can be successful later on.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Everyone has identity. It can be shaped in many different ways, by different things. The big idea of identity is that everyone's identity changes. Whether they like it or not. In the movie, Monty had an option to drink or be grumpy. He didn't have to be that way. But the O'Neals changed him. They made him believe and be able to overcome things that he struggled with. His past haunted him. The past is the past, no one can change that. Your identity can be shaped by your friends or your family. In the movie, Monty wrote a story. The main character was Jubal. Jubal shaped his own identity. He had a special personality. People's identities vary. Depending on who you are, or who you want to be. So much can change that. You can choose to be a good person, and change your ways. Or you could start out bad, maybe not liking some of the things you have done. There is a way to shape and alter those thoughts and feelings about who you are. Identity can bring people out in the open to be seen by everyone; to be brought back into the light. If you don't like the way you act, or someone around you acts. Change it. Make them(you) want to change their ways. Can you control the way your identity is shaped? Think about how you act, how your friends and family act. Even your idol. You can have the choice of your own identity.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I think your identity is shaped by what things you go through, the people that are closest to you, like your friends and family. I think your identity is your character, or how you act. Or what people see you as. If you have gone through some bad things in your life, maybe your identity shows it. Are you bitter about it? Do you not let the events damage your identity, and stay strong. All in all, it is you who shapes your identity. An identity is who you are, what your are, what things you like. You decide all of those things.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I think one of the main factors that shape our identities is the people around us. Our parents, when we are little, shape us. Think about it. The way they act is what we try to copy. We want to be just like them, and after a while it becomes habit. I also think that things that happen to us shape us. You are learning every day. You learn from experience, and mistakes. These are things that happen to us. Once we learn something new, we tend to change to add that into our lives. I’m not just talking about classroom learning here. If your parents get divorced, you learn what a bad relationship looks like, and you are now going to do what you can to not have one. Also if your parents get divorced, you have to grow up beyond your years to be able to cope. These things shape us. We are getting shaped everyday. Our identities will always be changing. Sometimes they change quickly, in a short amount of time, and other times they change slowly, on long periods of time. It doesn’t matter how it changes or what changes it, because it will always be personal to you. No other person in this world ever has had the same exact experiences as you. They haven’t had the same people around them, and the circumstances will be different. Out identities are unique in an amazing way. I also think we shape our own identities by our choices. Sure, Monty was driven to drinking by bad life circumstances, but he chose to drink. He didn’t have to, but he did. Things we choose shape us too.

  28. Identity is shaped on the way you are or things, that had happened to you. For example Monty's identity was really shaped when his wife died and wasn't happy drank a lot was depressed. Also he was paralyzed for most of his life and couldn't do much and, that made him depressed even more. Monty's identity really shaped out when he met the O'Neils they gave Monty hope and to forgive and let go of things, that had happened in the past. Finn helped Monty shape his identity from getting him to help her with her imagination and he didn't just give her something he gave something back to him to. That's not the only way you can shape an identity friends and shape your identity actions all those sorts of things, that shape someone's identity. Magic of Belle Isle showed how identity was shaped by having a depressed old drunk to a happy old man, Filled with laughter and hope. That's what identity is shaped in my own opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Identity is shaped based on life experiences and your actions. If you act nice to others, then they will be nice to you , which makes you a good person if you try to be kind and helpful with others. However, if you never try to be nice to people, then they probably won't be the friendliest to you, which doesn't make you a nice person. Monty in Belle Isle was nice to Carl Loop, which made Monty seems nice and I bet made Carl feel good that someone wanted to hang out with him. What also shapes identity, is doing the right thing. It's hard to make all of the right decisions, and nobody is perfect, so it's okay to make mistakes in life. In fact, it's perfectly normal. If you make a bad decision, then you can hopefully learn from the choice and do it right the next time it comes around in life. For example, not studying for a test is a bad decision, and if you get a bad grade you will hopefully realize that studying is good so your grade doesn't get badly effected by not studying. Always be you, and never let anything or anyone change you, because being true to yourself is also how identity is shaped.

  30. Some factors that shape and determine your identity are all on how you conduct yourself and what makes you you. How you treat others and yourself makes a big impact. If you are polite to others will give them a good impression and you'll feel better about yourself. If you are mean and nasty, and you don't take care of yourself, you will have developed a bad reputation. Identity is all based upon you and your choices with your life.

  31. How is Identity Shaped? That is the question we have been asked in class for weeks. Someone might say we pick our identity, but that isn't true. Our identity is given to us without us knowing it. It is determined by what kind of hobbies we may have or what situations in life we may go through. If you are around a family that is careless, you are likely to become careless too. The type of people you are exposed to every day have a big impact on what kind of person you become. Anything good or bad will cause us to change. You may not notice it, but our identity is changing every day, every moment that passes. A massive impact on a person's identity are life events such as parents getting divorced, relationship, or even people passing away. The smallest of things could change a person forever without them even noticing it. Everything you see can be a factor in creating your identity. Think about it.. Do you know how your identity was shaped? Do you even know your identity?

    ReplyDelete
  32. When I think of Identity, I think of the things that have shaped me to be who I am. To be honest there are a lot of things that shape identity. For instance, the way you are raised can be a big part of how you are shaped. If you are someone who was treated very poorly, you will most likely be very shy and independent. On the other hand, if you were treated with much respect and love, you will most likely be a more outgoing and caring person. Another thing that I think shapes identity are the people that you hang out with the most and the people that you are around. Some people tend to act a little different when they are around different people. It is like they change just to fit in with certain people. There is no need to do that. Just be yourself and do what you think is right. There are probably more, but those are the things that I think shape identity.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Identity ~ It's my own choice to simply be who I want to be. Making my own choices is a part of me that I love. It's almost like a freedom that I have. To be who I want, to say what I want, and to do what I want, well that is to a certain extent of course. For instance, my two best friends would be Alexa and my sister. We are with each other all day everyday. Of course I could hangout with whoever I want and some people would find it weird that I hangout with my sister, but I obviously enjoy hanging out with her. Although, that's just one of several of my decisions and decisions can get very difficult and very stressful. Yet, sometimes you just need to go with the flow and wait to see what happens. Although, the results can be very challenging and very hard to face, but it's always a lesson learned. The saying gets said a lot but is so very true " What doesn't kill you makes you stronger". That saying is so accurate I think just because I hear so many people complaining all the time, when in reality they really don't have things that hard and should be thankful for what they have. That's why I am thankful for all the choices my parents have let me make on my own. I have made several mistakes, but for every mistakes is always a lesson learned. Therefore, I am very thankful for all the privileges I have in order to make my decisions which allows me to grow up and get a taste of the real world.

  34. There are several factors that shape our identity. I think the first would have to be friends, the people you hang out with. Your friends influence your life more than you know it, sometimes positively, sometimes negatively. Finn shaped Monty's identity to make him realize that he still has a family. I think the second factor in shaping identity is your hobbies. Hobbies play a large role in our identities, whether it be gaming, sports, reading, or even writing. Writing shaped Monty's to a point in his life where he hated it. The third factor in shaping identity is knowledge. Knowledge can shape your identity in more ways that you know. For example, some of my friends are a year above me in some classes, and that is why I hang out with them. By hanging out with them, they teach me things that I didn't know before. Your Identity plays a big role in your life, a positive identity can lead you good places.

  35. Identity is shaped by Your surroundings. Who you grew up with what you did. Well you see people get shaped in different ways some are raised without parents. some are shaped by friends who were shaped different so they can shape into something else.

  36. I think Identity is by how you act by doing what you wanna do no other people and how your parents raised you either nice or polite or just plain stupid and don`t have any manners and it really don`t care about you but it all matters on you and could be that really nice person who is really nice to everybody and makes them feel really good about themselves one you could be that really mean person that nobody likes and is mean to everybody and that with just like in the story when Finn helped monty be a totally different person and you could tell the changes of Monty while you watched the movie.

  37. Factors that face our identity can be many different things. There are many different ways you can be shaped your personality, mind, decisions. The events that change you don't have to be big events, they can be the little things that chip away and morph you little by little. You can't control what is going to eventually happen to you, but your reaction effects the event just as much. You can change how other people feel about you, do they like you? Do they feel bad for you? Do they give you a gift that would make you feel good. Some events that would happen to you could be a divorce a terrible terrorist attack. Someone close to you dying. The little things can be how your friends talk/act. How you family acts and how long you're left alone at home what sports you play. What kind of job your parents have or how much money you family brings in. Identity is shaped on the events that occur in your lifetime.

  39. I think identity is shaped through the way you act and your state of being. You can always change your identity one day to the next by changing you clothes or something like that. You can never truly change your identity completely. It is something you are born with and you carry it on through life by being who you are. Some people say those around you can change your identity, which i don't think is true. Yes, when you hang around your friends they might change what you do or how you dress, but you are still you. Your identity doesn't just up and change like that. If you just act like yourself your identity is how u are.

  40. Identity is mainly shaped by yourself, what you do, how you live. If you play sports or anything else like that, it shapes your identity. Maybe even something with your family will shape your identity. Anything about you can shape your identity. Everything you do in your life shapes your identity. From what you do at home when your bored to how you act at school. Your identity can also change throughout your life. It could be described as something at one point, and then be described as a completely different thing later. A good example of that from the movie is Monte. At the beginning he was an old, bitter man who got drunk all the time. And by the end of the movie his identity had shaped into a loving man that generally cared about the people around him. Identity is all around just shaped by you.

  41. Identity is who we are and what we are made of. It is our characteristics. It may change through things that happen throughout time and affect you. Emotional, physical, or spiritual things. It doesn't have to fit into a certain group or be popular it can be what it is or was made to be. It may change out of love, fear, anger, depression. It may even be something it shouldn't because of who you hang around.

  42. I think that there are a lot of different things that can shape a persons identity. The thing that I think effects a persons identity the most is the people around them. I think that the people who are around you when you are young are the people who are going to have the greatest impact on how you will act when you are older. I also think that the different conflicts that people have to deal with effect the way they will act towards other people and other things. Often when you have a really good friend they can effect the way that you act because the one wants to be just like the other and then they start acting like each other and then sooner or later they will act like the other one used to and you will think that they have just completely switched personalities with each other. The last thing that I think can effect the way that a person will act is what type of things that they get involved in because the people who are in sports often act differently than those who do not do sports.

  43. When I was younger I depended a lot on my family and my religion to always do the right thing. Even if we didn't know it at the time we wanted to be good kids, we didn't want to be bad people and be remembered for that. When you grow up stuff like that happens, people constantly look at your past to see what you were like because as the saying goes, "people never change," but I think we do. I think we grow up and learn right from wrong. I think that we are able to choose for ourselves in life and figure out who we are and what we want to become. I think we have a right to our own religion, our own path, our own love story. It's what was meant to happen.
A lot of the times I was made fun of because of my religion or not taken seriously, and when I got my disorder I felt like that would happen again. I felt like I wouldn't be accepted because I was pretty much handicapped. I can't drive, I can't be too physical, I can listen to loud noises or look at bright lights. When I watched the movie I felt better about showing off who I was. Carl was courageous and didn't care what anyone thought. He was loved and needed in his neighborhood and in other people's life otherwise the story and the flow wouldn't be as good as it was.
When I think identity I think of a superhero. I think of someone hiding themselves to do the better good for people that they don't know. Kids' have always wanted to be superheroes, rockstars, or actors/actresses when they got older, but now I know the meaning of what it is and what you want to do to be one. Being that person who is there for everyone and is trusted to save the day is a good feeling and knowing that you have someone's back means a lot. These traits follow in the footsteps of faith. I'm not saying a nonbeliever can't be good, but God is good, he is strong and brave, trusting, and loving. He's my superhero he has shaped my identity and my life and love. He is the one I can count on when I fall flat on my face. The one to pick me up and tell me that he doesn't love me any less when I do something wrong. When I have people who love him around me I feel safe and like I'm wanted and I can follow and be stronger in my faith. They have helped me just as much.

  46. Identity is something that all of us have, something all of us were given at birth, but later in life, we shaped our identities into something that we wanted to be. Our identities have changed both intentionally and non-intentionally. Monty Wildhorn was someone that didn’t stand out at first, but chose to change his identity to show baseball promoters that he had what it took, that he wasn’t one that would hide behind others, but rather push through the crowd, show what he had to offer. That’s what brought him to know his loving, caring wife. Without shaping his identity, he wouldn’t have met this woman, a woman who had made him even better.

Monty had certainly changed his identity for the better. Then he was involved in a fatal car crash that killed his wife, and put him in a wheelchair. Then, he changed his identity again. It may not have been completely involuntary, nor voluntary, but both. Monty started drinking involuntarily, since he was trying to forget about the untimely death of his wife, but it turned into a voluntary identity change. He went from drinking on occasions when he remembered his wife to drinking all the time. It changed him.

Luckily, Monty had a nephew that wanted his old uncle back, not the one who drank until the bottle was dry. He brought him to Belle Isle, where he thought he could relax, start to forget about the past. Though he didn’t forget about the past, he learned to move on. By meeting the O’Neals, Monty changed his identity once again. He decided to change from a constant drunk to a caring man, the man he once was. Monty finally was happy in life again. Even though he missed his wife dearly, he was able to move on; change his identity. He had changed his identity for the last time, for the better.

  47. There are a lot of different factors that shape our identity. Such as the way you react to certain situations like the way people think of you, humility, betrayal, challenges, hard times, and happy times. If you react badly to a bad situation, it doesn't make you a bad person. You are entitled to your own opinion now matter what people say and if you were the one who made the wrong choice, you can think back to that situation and look where you went wrong and learn from it. People are changing all the time. Some may not even notice it, and other times it is dramatic and can be a good thing or a bad thing. Whatever it is, change is possible and you are the one in control of your life and decisions.

  48. Many different things shape everyones identity. If someone has divorced parents, they would probably be very different than if there parents were not divorced. many things change even if you just move 20 miles from town to town! You have to get new friends, and you have to get used to the town, if you are in school, you have to get used to the school and the teachers. If you move states, well, that is another post, even though I haven't had to move states, I had a hard time getting used to Earlham Iowa.

  49. Every person has a different identity. Me, other classmates, and even Carl Loop. Everyone's identity comes from their background, history, and how they live.

My identity is shaped from my family. I have lived around them long enough I should have a bit of identity that comes from them. I do many things that come from my mom. She loved to do art, play the trumpet, and play volleyball. I love to do all of those things as well. McKaila likes to dress up a bit sometimes, and I do occasionally as well. McKenna, well, she is pretty outgoing, and I guess I am a bit too!

My identity is also shaped how I live. I live in the country with horses, chickens, and dogs. From that, I am a country girl, and don't mind getting dirt on my hands!

There are many ways how everyone else identity is shaped. Yes someone's identity can come from their family. Sometimes that's not always the case although. Take the three O'Neil girls. Their identity is not just shaped through family, but also from the community.

In conclusion, how everyone's identity is shaped depends on many things from your family, the community, to how you live. Many people are different because of how their identity is shaped. So if you look at someone and think that whatever they do is weird, well their identity is shaped around that. So they might even think that whatever you do is weird! Identity is different for everyone, and it just depends on who you are!

  50. Identity is a big part of life and how it shapes us. We can all have different ways of how our identity is shaped, even though we all have an identity. There is a big variety of kinds or types of identities. Many kids's identities are shaped by their parents and the environment that they live in. For example, the O'Neil girls were definitely shaped by their mother and living in Bell Isle. Their parents' divorce definitely shaped Willow and how she sees life, even though she changed her ways of thinking throughout the movie.
Identities are most often changed when new people come into their lives. Finn and Flora were shaped a lot by Monte when he moved into Bell Isle. He changed their way of thinking and their outlook on life. He helped Finn see what wasn't there, and helped her develop her imagination. Monte changed Charlotte in many different ways too. Her love of piano grew even more when Monte encouraged her to play more often. Carl Loop was another character from the movie whose identity was changed and formed by Monte. He helped him believe that he was somebody he wasn't, but it was to be a bigger person and believe in himself more.
Whether it be in a movie, book, play, or in your own personal experiences, you can see how identity is shaped. You can also see how much of an impact your identity has on you and others around you.

  51. Identity, its one of the things that you have had since you were born. Its the one thing about you that no one can change. The people that you love is what shapes your identity. Another thing that shapes your identity is your friends and family. The people that have a negative and positive effect on you life also shape identity. Negative and positive people all make you stronger but it completely different ways. Most importantly I think that how you are treated makes a big impact on you. Think about in the movie, how the O’Niels made a huge impact on Monty. He was always negative ALL THE TIME, until some people who were positive came along and he changed completely after truly meeting them.

  52. Your identity is shaped on how you were raised as a kid. The history good or bad that you had also shapes the way you are and the way you act. How you want to pursue things shape how your identity is. The things you encounter every day is also a big thing that shapes your identity. The people you hangout with talk to are also another big impact on your identity. The way you handle things choose the path you take to shape your identity.

  53. Identity. What is it? How is it shaped?
I think a person's identity is shaped by many things. Past events are a big part of our identities, as are the people we're around.
The way a person acts, talks, and behaves is probably based on their childhood. If they had a good childhood, complete with a happy family and no severe emotional--or physical, I suppose--scarring, I think you are more likely to be happy and have a good reputation. If you have had some traumatic events in your past, I think that you are more apt to be less happy and a bit more rambunctious to make up for the lack of fun you had in your childhood. This is psychologist Lauren talking, here.
I also think that the people you chose to associate with definitely shape ones identity. I think your friends, mainly, make you who you are. If they are kind, then you seem to be to. If your friends are rebellious and rude, then unfortunately, that will likely rub off on you.
Identity is shaped in a variety of ways, but I think those are the two main ones.

  54. I think Identity is shaped by how your parent taught you to live, grow up and to do anything. If your childhood was strict, you would most likely never do anything bad. If your parents were not, you most likely don't like doing what others tell you what to do. It just shows what kind of person you are by how you were raised. Parents divorced or having only a mom or a dad may make your identity seem different than other peoples identity. The good and bad things of your life will form and shape it and also the things you own. The toys, hobbies, even your bed shape part of it. You could be sleeping on a rock hard bed and wake up with a bad back and be in a grumpy mood all day. Pretty much everything shapes.

  55. Identity is shaped by how you grow up and what happens in your life, if you move a lot you wont have the security of feeling like you have a home which will shape you as a person. The environment you live in affects the way you are as a person also, if you're rich and living a good life it will affect you in a different way then if you're poor and having a hard time making the money last every month. If you have a family member in your life die you can get shielded in and depressed as monty became after his wife died in the movie. I moved to a whole new country away from my family and even tho i've only lived here for a month I have already changed as a person.
